Public Leadership Challenge: Leadership in a healthy and sustainable food environment

On World Food Day students, professionals and academics will get together in The Hague, for yet another Public Leadership Challenge: Which shared leadership is needed to create a sustainable and healty food environment?

Nowadays, approximately half of the Dutch population is (to a certain degree)  overweight. It’s becoming clear that besides lifestyle and individual characteristics, what scientists call an “obesogenic environment” plays an important role in this problem. Our environment could promote obesity, because of the widespread availability of unhealthy food. Furthermore, this unhealthy food environment is not the only challenge the Dutch food supply is facing. How, what and when people eat, has a big impact on nature, our environment, the economy and our health care.

The growing awareness about the importance of our food environment, raises the question what the different actors in this spectrum can do to make it healthy and sustainable. During the challenge, local and national government will join forces with academics, experts and students to find concrete answers to this question.

This Public Leadership Challenge is a shared initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Internal Affaris, the Municipality of Ede, Leiden University, PBL, Wageningen University, Voedingscentrum, Rabobank and Transitie Coalitie Voedsel, using an open source concept of the Public Leadership Foundation.
